Jeffrey L. Apfelbaum

Dr. Apfelbaum is Professor and Chairman of The Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

He received his BA at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and his MD at Northwestern University School of Medicine. Dr. Apfelbaum has authored or coauthored more than 200 articles and abstracts and book chapters concerning the use of short-acting fast emergence anesthetics, practice standards, guidelines, and practice parameters in the medical specialty of anesthesiology, postoperative pain management, and specialized techniques in ambulatory anesthesiology.

He has received many awards and honors of recognition for his contribution to the anesthesiology community, which include the Distinguished Service Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (2011), the Society of Ambulatory Anesthesia (2010), and the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists (2009). Dr. Apfelbaum received the William O. McQuiston Award for Excellence from the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists in 2004 and he delivered the prestigious Emery A Rovenstine Memorial Lecture at the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 2012.

Dr. Apfelbaum is a Past President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists), the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia and the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists. the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Associations (SAAA) and the Association of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs (AAAC).

Dr. Apfelbaum has been a Visiting Professor at more than 80 International and National Academic Institutions, and an Invited Lecturer at over 200 International, National, and Regional Conferences. He also has had a leadership role in the creation, modification, and critical assessment for reaffirmation of over 50% of the standards, guidelines, and practice parameters of the American Society of Anesthesiologists related to patient care and safety. Additionally, he has served as a strong advocate for the medical specialty of anesthesiology.
