Giovanni Landoni

Prof. Giovanni Landoni, MD, earned his degrees in Milan University and is currently Associate Professor at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, Milan, where he works as head of research in the department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care of San Raffaele Scientific Institute. In the period 2006-2017 he participated to ideation, writing and implementation of 14 grants that got funding from national and international donors and attracted 10 further trials supported by grants from abroad.

He served as reviewer for over 50 journals (NEJM, JAMA, The Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, Circulation, Critical Care Medicine and British Journal of Anesthesia among others) and for foreign grant agencies and he is member of the Editorial Board of several international journals.

He was member of the Technical Scientific Committee (CTS) of AIFA, the Italian Food and Drug Administration (2009-March 2012).

He is (2012-2014 and 2015-2017) the Italian member of the Representative Council of EACTA (European Association of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologists).

His strong clinical and research interests in intensive care and anesthesia has resulted in more than 400 scientific publications (320 in indexed journals, total IF>600, cited >4,500 times, HI=35 HI 5years 19) including randomized trials on NEJM, JAMA, British Medical Journal and Circulation, and over 100 invitations in national and international congresses. He participated to 32 randomized controlled trials.

He ideated, organized and published the findings of the innovative web based International Consensus Conferences with thousands of participants from over 70 countries on: Improving survival in critically ill patients (2013 and 2016); Improving Survival in Critically ill Patients with or at Risk for Acute Kidney Injury (2012); Reducing Perioperative Mortality with Drugs or Non-Surgical Techniques/Strategies (2011 and 2015); Reduction in Mortality in Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care (2010 and 2015).

He has strong interest in Emergency Medicine and is member of the ECMO team of San Raffaele Scientific Institute. He worked as a Rescue Helicopter Doctor in 2006/2007 and for Europ Assistance (2006/2008) for care and transport of critically ill expatriates.

He spent three years abroad performing research and working in the U.S.A., Spain, the Netherlands, India (where he married) and Uganda.

He spends his non working hours with his kids (Giulia 12y and Mattia 10y) and working non-for-profit organizations such as “Project for People” since 1993.

He is a member of MENSA Italia since 2001. He won numerous prizes in national and international congresses. He is member of ESICM, ESA, EACTA and SIAARTI.

He filed applications for 5 patents in the field.
